Higher education of
medical in Pakistan
There are two opportunities
of higher education in Pakistan for medical professional. i.e. pass the
fellowship exam of FCPS (Fellow of College of Physician and Surgeon)
both parts or get employment in any teaching hospital to complete M.S
(Master of Science) in the
field of ones choice.
Details of both the schemes are as under:
1. FCPS (Fellow of
College of Physician and Surgeon)
The fellowship examination
of the college of Physician and Surgeon Pakistan consists of two parts.
Any medical graduate having
M.B.B.S can
participate in the first part. This exam is held twice a year in
the month of April and October. To participate in the second part
of FCPS, three to four years experience is required in the field where
you want to do fellowship. For this purpose one has to perform
duties in any authorised hospital in the desired field or to participate
in a training programme to get practical experience. No training
scheme is offered by the college of physician and surgeon to the
desirous of higher education. Therefore doctors have to arrange
this training themselves. The college of physician and surgeon
give permission to the students for employment in hospital or training
programme. Candidate has to write a thesis on a specific theme
during this period of training and submitting to the college. If
the thesis is up to the required level, it is accepted otherwise
returned to the candidate so that it can be corrected and resubmitted.
Once the thesis is accepted then the candidate becomes eligible for the
second part of the fellowship exam on the basis of two to three years
practical training and thesis. Passing the second part of the
examination the candidate is granted the FCPS degree and he qualifies as
specialist in his specific branch. He can work as medical
consultant.
2.
M.S (Master of Science)
After
M.B.B.S,
Master degree in a specific field is called Master of Science. It
is necessary for the desirous of M.S that he must have four to five
years experience in a specific field. He has to get himself
registered for a five to six years work with a teaching hospital under
the supervision of a professor. During the training period the
candidate has to complete a thesis under the supervision of his
professor. A panel of professionals go through the thesis and if find it
up to the required level, it is accepted. A written test is
conducted afterwards and in the end interview is carried out. M.S
is more suitable for those young doctors who has limited financial
resources but is hardworking, sincere with his profession and
passionate.
3.
MCPS
College of Physician and
Surgeon of Pakistan offers diploma course titling MCPS (Family Medicine)
to general practitioner. This examination is conducted twice a year. A
fellow ship examination in FCPS (Family Practice) is also conducted by
the CPSP.
4.
D.C.H (Diploma in Child Health)
A doctor can complete a
Diploma in child health after
M.B.B.S and can
get the job of a junior consultant. The prerequisite of this
diploma is
M.B.B.S degree
and one year house job in the branch of children treatment. This
degree is accepted in Pakistan as well as abroad.
