Perhaps the first mechanical engineer of the world was the man

 who invents wheel and the laws of motion was started to be used for the welfare of the mankind.  With the passage of time progress has been made in different branches of mechanical engineering.

 Industrial revolution of seventeenth century gave new dimension and ways.  Discoveries of new energy resources impart mechanical engineering a status of modern science.  As long as the progress  made headway, the need of modern colleges and universities for education and training began to be felt. Mechanical engineer jobs are published regularly show the demand of mechanical engineers in Pakistan. Today, there exist a close relation and link between education institution and industrial organization.

Initially, mechanical engineers are hired as trainee engineers and after a one-year on-the-job training, they are promoted to the post of Assistant Engineer from there they move on to the post of Deputy Engineer and finally become Chief Engineer.  As far as the salary is concerned, it depends upon whether these engineers are working in the public or the private sector.  In government organisations, initially  they are paid around Rs. 20,000 to 25,000, while in private organisations in Pakistan, trainee engineers can get as much as Rs. 35000 to Rs. 40000. 

Mechanical engineering degree holders have a great scope in countries such as the UK, the USA and Canada, the degree holders from Pakistan universities are required to pass a Professional engineering exam in foreign countries in order to get a job there. 

Nature of work

Mechanical engineering is that branch of artesian in which production of machines and energies are discussed. It is especially related to laws of motion and force.  Any mechanical engineer has basically four functions:

  • Understanding of mechanical science

  • Research, design and construction of machines

  • Knowledge of production of material and energies

  • Administrative, advisory and marketing skills

All the above functions are based on modern scientific style and great progress has been made in these fields since industrial revolution till now.  In today’s modern universities mechanical engineers are taught modern subjects like Operation Research, Value Engineering and Problem analysis by rationalized approach. 

 

Mechanical  Engineering Degree

bachelor of engineering degree course (B.E) is comprised of four years of duration.  Admission are normally made on merit as well as quota system i.e. area wise seats allocation.  Minimum qualification for admission is Intermediate Science (pre-engineering) with 2nd division. Students have to qualify an admission test to secure their place in the university. 

 

 

Jobs Opportunities for Mechanical Engineers in Pakistan

Pakistan is a developing country making rapid progress in various field of science.  Public and private sectors are expanding, opportunities of employment for degree and diploma holders engineers are increasing with the same speed.  Joblessness in engineering is less than any other field.  Only those engineers are jobless, who are not ready to work in a place they do not like or they are not satisfied from the salaries and other benefit offered.    However jobs are got on quota system in public sector while in private sector academic qualification, skills and hardwork are basis of selection to a job.  Normally intelligent students start getting jobs offer from different organizations and companies even prior to the announcement of their final years result. There are large industrial units and organization like Pakistan Still mills. Pakistan Automobile Corporation, TIP, KESC,  ordnance factories, electric supply companies, foundries, textile units, shipping companies, ship building organization, atomic power plants, heavy mechanical complex etc., where there is a extraordinarily great demand   for mechanical engineers.  In governmental organization engineers are employed in grade 17 while diploma holder engineers offered the service of grade 16.  Corporation and autonomous bodies have their own pay scales which are more attractive and competitive in terms of salaries and other remuneration and benefits.  Private sector companies give importance to skill rather than degree. 

 

Opportunities for private business

In the field of engineering there  are also sufficient chances of success for private business.  Government has established banks and financial institutions to provide loan on soft terms. 

 

Registration of Mechanical Engineers in Pakistan

Registration of membership for professional organization is very important.  In Pakistan. All the engineers have to get themselves registered with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).  Institute of Mechanical Engineers is the greatest professional organization having offices all over the Europe and America.  This organization has been serving for 120 years.  Its membership is increasing by 5.6 annually
