prospects for biochemists in Pakistan as

research and teaching. Many of our degree-holders are teaching in the
Biochemistry department of various universities in Pakistan and a lot of
them are working in different research-based organisations such as
National Agriculture Research Centre and Pakistan Medical Research
council (PMRC).
Students who to
complete their PhD in the subject are appointed as assistant professors
in the universities according to the Tenure Track System (TTS) of higher
education commission (HEC). This system is practised in the US and Western
Europe in which an academic does not enjoy a permanent position on the
faculty right from the start, but earns it on the basis of many years of
solid research and teaching.
According to TTS,
teachers are initially appointed for a three-year period followed by a
soft review which, if successful, automatically leads to renewal of the
contract for another three years. At the end of the six-year
probationary period, a committee of international experts, independent
of the university in question, considers the faculty members for tenure
permanent appointment on the basis of publications and the curriculum
vitae. They are initially paid Rs 80000.
